Maxing Out Your TSP In 2026: What Huntsville's Federal And Contractor Workforce Needs To Know

Redstone Arsenal employs about 45,500 people, and plenty of them move between federal positions and defense contractors over a career. The same city post ties the arsenal to 143,156 jobs across the Tennessee Valley.

What are the 2026 TSP Contribution Limits?

The IRS raised the annual limit to $24,500, up from $23,500 in 2025. That amount covers traditional and Roth contributions combined in the TSP, the federal government's version of a 401(k), and it excludes agency matching. Workers who are 50 or older can add an $8,000 catch-up, for $32,500 in total. Those who are 60, 61, 62, or 63 may qualify for a higher $11,250 catch-up, which lifts the ceiling to $35,750.

How Should Huntsville Workers Think About Maxing Contributions?

Timing matters as much as the dollar figure. Reaching the limit early also stops agency matching contributions for the rest of the year (see How Elective Deferral Limits Work). Spread across 26 biweekly paychecks, $24,500 comes to about $942 per pay period, and the full $35,750 for ages 60 to 63 comes to about $1,375 per pay period.

Higher earners face a newer rule. Anyone with more than $150,000 in 2025 wages subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes must make 2026 catch-up contributions as Roth, meaning after-tax dollars.

How Do TSP Limits Compare to 401(k) Limits for Contractors?

The dollar figures match, so the $24,500, $8,000, and $11,250 limits apply to both. The difference is how they are counted. Elective deferrals are combined across every plan a worker joins. Someone who puts $15,000 into the TSP and then takes a contractor job can add only $9,500 more to that employer's 401(k) before hitting $24,500. Payroll offices see only their own contributions, so the worker tracks the combined total. The $72,000 annual additions limit, which includes employer money, applies separately to plans from unrelated employers.

Contractor plans carry two extra wrinkles. The super catch-up is optional for plan sponsors, so a 401(k) may not offer it. A plan without a Roth option also cannot take catch-up contributions from higher earners.

Why Does Rolling Over to an IRA Increase Investment Choices?

After separation, a TSP balance can move to an IRA. The TSP itself offers the G, F, C, S, and I funds plus the L Funds, which blend those five, according to a Defense Department handout. Participants with at least $40,000 can open the mutual fund window, though the first transfer must be $10,000 or more and no more than 25% of the account. An IRA has no such caps and can hold individual stocks, bonds, ETFs, and thousands of mutual funds.

What Should Huntsville Workers Do Next?

Confirm year-to-date contributions with payroll and compare them with the limit for your correct age group. Anyone who has moved between a federal job and a contractor should add both plans together before changing an election. A rollover decision deserves a cost comparison first, since the TSP and an IRA differ in fees, services, and withdrawal rules. Anyone starting late in the year would need a larger amount per paycheck to reach the same contribution limits, so a review works best earlier in the year.
