He enjoys following his family's academic and athletic pursuits as well as hunting golf balls, following Hoosier basketball and USA soccer, and travel throughout the U.S.  Steve has attended four World Cups but has yet to play in any.

Mel is a member of the CFA Institute and Kingdom Advisors. For over six years Mel has been on the Finance and Investment Committees of Monroe Harding, a nonprofit serving foster children since 1893.

Personal

Mel and his wife, Kimala, spend much of their free time with their young adult children and friends. Kimala describes their lives by saying, “We love Millennials!” They attend Grace Church and enjoy serving there in various ways.

Mel enjoys gardening, running, canoeing and sailing, and is a coffee and tea enthusiast.  Raised in Mobile, Alabama, Mel is a second-generation Crimson Tide fan. (You can take the boy out of Alabama, but...)

Kim, her husband, their 2 children, and their 3 dogs live in Speedway, IN (famous for the Indianapolis 500). She attends Speedway Christian Church where she has served as a mentor to kids preparing to be baptized. Kim enjoys volunteering for the high school boy’s soccer and cheerleading teams’ Moms’ clubs, serving as a Secretary for the High School Athletic Booster Board, and being a board member for a local pre-school. When clients choose Oasis for investment management, they are receiving experienced investment professionals that adhere to a strategic investment philosophy based on academic research. Oasis Wealth firm primarily employs Dimensional Fund Advisors (DFA) funds in reaching the desired asset allocation mixes and global diversification.  Although DFA is one of the largest independently-owned investment management firms and has been around since 1981, they do not advertise. Their funds are available only to institutions and a select group of independent advisors.  DFA employs evidenced-based decision making, seeks tax efficiency (i.e., strive to keep turnover and transaction costs low), and tends to be low cost relative to other managers. + Your office is not near me. Can I still work with you?

Yes. In fact, nearly 50% of our clients live outside of our headquarters in Nashville. We can meet you virtually as if you are sitting across the table from us, and we are available as needed. Plus, we have office locations outside in Atlanta, Tampa, and Orlando where we regularly meet clients in-person. Geographic distance does not mean we have a distant relationship. We regularly travel throughout the Southeast and could more than likely meet in-person. Some clients like to meet us at least once face-to-face while other clients prefer a completely virtual working relationship. We want to get to know you regardless of where you live. We need to be licensed or exempt from licensing  in the applicable state in order to work with our clients, of course. 

 

 
+ What type of clients do you work with?

Although we work with a variety of existing clients, we primarily serve three types of clients: near retirees, retirees, and widows. Our clients typically start with us in their early 50s to early 70s. Our clients are either beginning to plan more earnestly for retirement, are making some critical decisions as they are on the cusp of retirement, or are realizing they need a more complete advisor in their retirement years. The issues with retirement are unique and involve a myriad of quantitative and non-quantitative issues. We have spent years working in this area, and we realize this is where our expertise and heart lies. We also passionately serve widows to help them overcome a difficult transition and gain confidence to continue to live a full and meaningful life on their terms and in their time.

 

 
+ Are there particular types of professions that you work with?

We work with a variety of professions and backgrounds, but many include senior executives, engineers, physicians, business owners, and successful professionals. We have worked with employees from several companies, including Nissan, CHS, Coca Cola, Bridgestone, St. Thomas Hospital, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, ShareCare, Wells Fargo, among others. Numerous smaller firms such as home builders, oral surgeons, boutique law firms, and pediatric practices have called on Oasis Wealth to deliver financial planning and investment advice. Our clients tend to appreciate their advisors being detailed-oriented and value what a multi-disciplined team can provide.

 

 
+ Do you have to manage my investments if I were to work with you?

When you retain us for financial planning services, there is no obligation to hire us for investment management. At the end of our financial planning services engagement, you get to choose how to implement our investment recommendations. At that point, most of our clients do choose to retain us to manage, monitor, and adjust their portfolio, but this is not required.

 
+ If you work with my mom, will you communicate with me?

Yes. We like working with families and take seriously the trust the family is placing in us to work with their mother. Of course, we would need to get your mom’s permission on the confidentiality issues, and your mom will always be the client. For situations where the children live in a different city than their mother, we can conduct meetings where we meet with your mom in her house while allowing other family members to “meet” with us virtually.

 
+ What is fee-only and fiduciary?

We are indeed fee-only and fiduciaries at all times. Fee-only means we do not get paid commissions and cannot and will not accept referral fees. The vast majority of advisors work for Wall Street and are incentivized to sale certain product that increases their compensation. We are independent fiduciaries in the true meaning of the word and always work in our client’s best interest. We only get paid by our clients. Fee-only planners can get paid a variety of ways, including flat fee or as a percentage of assets that they manage. Fiduciary means we have the legal responsibility to place our clients' interests ahead of our own. Besides the legal requirement, our value system drives our behavior in acting as fiduciaries.

 
+ Do you charge for your first meeting?

No, we do not charge for the “Get Acquainted” meeting. Our goal at that meeting is for us to get to know each other. In that meeting, we both have a chance to ask questions and determine if we would be a good match for working together.

 
+ Do you have account minimums?

We do not have account minimums, per se. In addition to our financial planning fee, our minimum annual fee to manage investments is $2,500 annually. Our clients typically have or will soon have a minimum of $600,000 in investable assets. Our clients typically have investable assets that range from $700,000 to $10,000,000.

 
+ How are you different?

We are independent fee-only fiduciaries that work as a multi-disciplined team with experts in tax, investments, and retirement planning. Rather than being a jack-of-all trades, we prefer offering our clients a team-based approach to providing sound, competent advice. Very few have fee-only financial planning firms have the credentials and years of experience that Oasis Wealth provides, including CFP®, CPA, CFA, MBA, JD, and LLM.

 
+ I am currently with a private bank. Is your firm a good match for my family and me?

Yes. In fact, while our leadership and advisors came from the private bank world and respect various aspects of a private bank, we are thrilled to offer private-bank like advice without the negatives inherent in a private bank, including potential conflicts of interest with cross-sell goals, higher fees, or inflexible ways of working with clients. We don’t lend money, but we can work with outside lending institutions to potentially provide more competitive lending than you may be getting with the one-stop shop approach at a private bank.
